The Beatles: 10 Perfect Non-Single Tracks
3. Taxman: Revolver (1966)
Each Beatles album coincided with a significant shift in the cultural climate. Revolver came at a time when the group had reached such levels of popularity that John Lennon delivered his famous remark: "We're more popular than Jesus".
Although the comment was enough to make conservative Christians twitch with horror, Lennon had a point. The group were undoubtably the biggest act in the world; with every album, they weren't only increasing their popularity, they were shaping the way music was made.
With the decision to cease touring the group leaned into the use of experimental studio techniques, playing tracks in reverse, and utilising a wider collection of instruments. Without a doubt Revolver is one of the Beatles' most innovative and creative records.
The opening number "Taxman" was the first of three Harrison tunes on the album. Born out of the frustration felt at tax policies - which resulted in the Beatles paying over 90% of their earnings to the government - Harrison's lyrics were a scathing takedown of Labour leader Harold Wilson. The anti-authoritarian sentiment coupled with the extreme use of feedback and downward stroke strumming, made this a punk track long before the genre had even been conceived.
