The Beatles: 13 Tracks To Forget
1. Dig A Pony
Putting Dig A Pony on here is somewhat painful because musically, it's actually quite good. The melodies are above average and catchy, unusual given the dark and dreary vibe of Let It Be as an album.
The sad truth is that strong melodies aren't very meaningful without strong lyrics to back them up. Such is the case with Dig A Pony.
The entire song features nonsensical lyrics that make absolutely zero sense. The imagery is strange and if there's a metaphor in there somewhere, it has yet to be found. It's almost as though Lennon was trying to channel Bob Dylan with quirky lyrics that just worked without making sense. In this case, that effort fell flat.
Even Lennon himself wasn't a fan of the song. Speaking to David Sheff of Playboy in 1980, in what would be one of his final interviews, he called the song "garbage."
Thus, solid melodies aside, Dig A Pony comes off more as a bland attempt at blues and can be skipped if so desired.
