Conceived by Krieger, the length of this single seven minutes and counting didn't deter the music-buying public with the track ruling both the airwaves and the charts throughout 1967. Everything about this one clicks into place; from Manzareks iconic keyboard opening, Morrisons delivery of the simplest of lyrics, Krieger's intricate playing throughout the tracks instrumental section all the way up to Densmore corralling us to get lost in the tracks rousing finale, this is a true showcase of the bands individual talent and one that rightly put them on the map. Often covered badly (Will Young and Shirley Bassey, we're looking at you) and occasionally done well (Jose Feliciano), the songs influence spans decades and deserves to be cited as one of the best singles of all time. Waxing Lyrical You know that it would be untrue/ you know that I would be a liar/ if I was to say to you/ girl, we couldn't get much higher Sung with swagger and cool, these subversive lines saw The Doors rise from their position as darlings of the LA underground to that of the most dangerous band on the planet.
