Tool: 10 Albums We Waited For Longer Than The New Album
7. The Avalanches - Wildflower (~16 Years)
'Plunderphonics' describes the art of using sampling in a piece of music (it is also a really fun word) and The Avalanches' debut album Since I Left You, is a widely-heralded example of the genre, said to include around 3500 samples in total. One of the best reviewed albums of the 2000s, the copyright dodgers set the bar high for themselves for a potential follow-up.
While work on the sophomore initially started in 2005, the band found themselves hitting a number of roadblocks. By 2007, The Avalanches had dissipated to consist only of Robbie Chater and Tony Di Biasi, Chater suffered from an auto-immune disease, and other projects took up much of the members' time including a 2013 King Kong musical and a psychedelic animation project. Not sure which sounds more mental really.
By April 2016, the social media teases had begun, including the band mocking themselves for their long hiatus. By the summer, Wildflower was release unto the world, complete with a sea of samples, including Queens of the Stone Age, The Beatles and The Sound of Music.
Whilst not quite on par with the debut, Wildflower was a triumph in its own right, normalising a rating of 83 on Metacritic.
