1. The Beatles - Yesterday
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRen3jDqViI Top spot goes to this crooner - as well as being a classic, it's also the most-covered pop song in history. It was once quoted that over 900 artists had professionally covered this song but the actual figure (statistically calculated using PRS claims) is somewhere nearer 2,200 'Yesterday' was recorded for inclusion on the 1965 album 'Help!' and was never actually released - at the time of original release - by the band's label as a single in the UK. It was vetoed as a single by the band because it is, in fact, a solo number. Paul McCartney is the only Beatle to appear on the track and plays an acoustic guitar accompanied by a string quartet. He wrote the song personally with no input from John Lennon and the pair were only credited as such due to contractual obligation. The re-released single for the UK came in 1976. A common myth is that Paul McCartney attempted to change the songwriting credits on the Beatles back catalog to read 'McCartney - Lennon' sometime in the 1990's due to the fact he was the surviving member of the songwriting partnership. This is untrue, with the exception of 'Yesterday'. Given the previous veto due to the solo performance McCartney asked Yoko Ono if the songwriting credits could reflect this on the Anthology releases in 1995. She refused. For much the same reasons as before we'd highly recommend avoiding this track due to it's suggestion of an unrequited love that your current girl/boyfriend just doesn't fit. The Beatles recorded lots of great love songs - and even 'Octopus Garden' would be a much better choice for capping off that playlist than this one - so think twice for, as Celine Dion once said, the sake of our love and our memories. I'll get my coat. That concludes our look at some of the best anti-Valentine's tunes on the planet. As usual please leave your comments below with your suggestions on songs not to play to your loved one this February 14th.
