10. REM - Everybody Hurts
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijZRCIrTgQc Once rumoured to be the song during which Kurt Cobain killed himself allegedly the album 'Automatic for the People' was found in Cobain's stereo player at the time of his death Everybody Hurts was released in 1992 and proved so popular it became a single in 1993. The string arrangement for the track was written by Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones and the song was covered by The Corr's on the latter's MTV Unplugged session with many arguing that this is reason alone for it to be included here. For some reason the UK cassette single release of the track featured 'Pop Song 89' (from the album 'Green') as a B-Side. Considering the previous song was already enough of a hit least not because of the infamous "nipple is a nipple" dancers you'd think the band would have wanted to capitalise more on the space. But perhaps, just like cassettes, they didn't see the point. It's generally understood that almost everything REM has ever released would be a bad choice as an after-dinner aphrodisiac. Musical genius? Yes. Romantic? Definitely not!
