3. Oasis Definitely Maybe
Theres enough criticism that can justifiably be levelled at Oasis, but before all of those accusations of blatant plagiarism, Liam being an utter spanner and their lack of musical adventure, there was a time when Oasis had the world in the palm of their hands.
Definitely Maybe revisited the classic mores of what makes rock and roll; the desire of a new life, boredom and the need to simply make one hell of a racket.
Rock N Roll Star covers all three of these elements and delivers them in a neat little package: I live my life in the city/theres no easy way out/the days moving just too fast for me/I need some time in the sunshine/gotta slow it right down/days moving just too fast for me. What Oasis may have lacked in intellectual and musical merit, they more than made up for with the common touch. Working class ennui may have been ruminated upon countless times in music, but it was Oasis that managed to define it so succinctly at that time.
Cigarettes & Alcohol achieves a similar goal, emphasising the fuel that drives the average persons excitement and reason for existence. The album showcased Noels way with a simple, catchy lyric (even if some of them did rip-off Coca Cola!) and with songs like
Married With Children, provided a million couples with an awkward moment or two as they came to realise the song might just be about them. http://youtu.be/NJ8gMQK4-BQ
