9. Miley Cyrus Makes Us Collectively Roll Our Eyes At The VMA's
Yeah, you all knew I had to bring this up at some stage. I didn't want to either, but whether you liked it or not, Miley Cyrus' stunt at the VMA's this year touched every single dark corner of the internet, and was, unfortunately, one of the most talked about events in the music scene this year. The performance ended up dwarfing any controversy Bieber, or anyone else in general, managed to drum up throughout the year, having not seen such public and shameless exposure of one's genitals since Madonna's heyday. However, while such excessive hip gyration would have been controversial a few decades back for pushing the boundaries of conservative expectations, Cyrus' attempts to masturbate with a rubber foam hand and allow Robert Thicke to dry hump her from behind just felt uncomfortable, embarrassing and out of character. Instead of being met with the shock and outrage Cyrus may have hoped for, her attempt at emulating '90s pop edginess quickly made her the laughing stock of the world wide web. Social media allowed us to yet again revel in some good old fashioned Schadenfraude and many of us became committed to the cause of making Miley look as laughably pathetic and childish as ever, as predictable, tired and unfunny memes flooded our facebook and twitter feeds for weeks. I wish I didn't have to include this in this list, but we only have ourselves to blame for letting the whole affair take center stage in our media circus for much longer than it ever deserved.
