Top 16 Anti-Mainstream Albums Of 2013

16. Joe Satriani €“ Unstoppable Momentum

Satriani The man, the myth, the living legend that is Joe Satriani continues to exude the characteristics of a six-string messiah, putting out yet another album of intricately composed guitar-fuelled tracks that make the rest of us question we€™re actually playing the same instrument. Satch is as flawless as they come, slaying in the live arena just as much as on-record, and with a fair share of shred in his back-catalogue, on more recent releases you can tell he€™s just having fun experimenting with different tonalities and themes. 2010€™s Black Swans & Wormhole Wizards saw Professor Satchifunkilus (genuinely an album name!) tone things down and pad out his compositional possibilities, and it€™s most definitely an approach he€™s furthered here. From the gorgeous progression of the title track, to the quixotic and quirkily-infectious Three Sheets to the Wind, and back to the Route 66-lone-American-ranger-swagger of Shine On American Dreamer, it€™s truly a sumptuous collection of tracks that further cements Satriani€™s place as one of the greatest players there will ever be.
