13. One Vision

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_1IMZmJe-U If ever one song can be used to describe the resurrection and dedication of Queen, then 'One Vision' would definitely be it. Following a less than ideal recording of 'The Works' in 1984 the band were allegedly on the verge of implosion, having celebrated their 10th anniversary in 1983 but suffered falling record sales and interest since. When approached to do 'Live Aid' in 1985 the band made the decision to perform at the event during a restaurant meal in Japan. Their performance went on to become one of the most legendary and iconic events in music history and the media interest generated by such an event were beyond anything the quartet could have expected. 'One Vision' was subsequently recorded as a single, being directly inspired by fundraising efforts and global unity through music, as well as the life and times of Martin Luther King and his struggle against insurmountable odds in the work he did. Of course, one could be cynical, suggesting that Queen should have donated proceeds from the singles sale to a charity €“ which they did not €“ and should have also then refused to later perform at the infamous Sun City in South Africa against the wishes of anti-apartheid groups. That being said it's still a great song and features a "Blurred Visions" version in which Mercury used words to compensate for the lyrics that had yet to be written €“ often including the phrase "fried chicken" from these sessions as a humorous footnote when performing the song live.

First studied Journalism in Ireland in 2003, returning to Sunderland University on the tenth anniversary of my first studies in the subject to continue towards an MA. Interested in all sorts including WWE, Music, Film, TV and Games. Has travelled around a bit to places like California, Ontario and Mexico and plans to do more of the same soon again. Recently I've been writing pieces on my favourite topics which have included obscure theme music from nostalgic shows, Guns N' Roses and a few other surprises I'll be happy to share in time!
