6. Yesterday - The Beatles
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oXPgZjm6Uk I'm a massive Beatles fan, so there was never going to be any chance that one of their songs wouldn't make this list. Bias I know, but there we are. This - along with my weakness for strings in pop music - meant that the song I would choose was never in doubt. Yesterday is simply one of the most beautiful and haunting songs ever written, and naturally many of you will disagree with this assessment: hopefully there are a fair few out there who will agree with me on this. In fact, Yesterday was voted as the best song of the 20th Century by a BBC Radio 2 Poll in 1999 and as the No. 1 pop song of all-time by Rolling Stone Magazine in 2000. The lyrics are wonderfully simplistic: "Why she had to go I don't know she wouldn't say, I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday." Within the short 2 minute duration, you fully understand and relate to the fact that this is a song about how fleeting love can be. Simply put: appreciate what you have because tomorrow it could be gone. A fitting message for those who under appreciate their partners and a painful reminder for those who wish they could go back and do something different to prevent a breakup.
