Valentine's Day: 20 Greatest Love Songs Of All Time

4. €œI Will Always Love You€ - Dolly Parton

http://youtu.be/gS-F4rfU4ns Remember the classic Chinatown scene where Jack Nicholson slaps Faye Dunaway around, and she€™s enigmatically calling out, €œShe€™s my sister. She€™s my daughter.€? Well, trying to get somebody to decide which version of €œI Will Always Love You€ (Dolly€™s. Whitney€™s. Dolly€™s. Whitney€™s.) is equally confusing, but always interesting to debate. Dolly released the song in 1974 on her Jolene album. Dolly€™s version is beautiful in its own right: there is a haunting vulnerability in her voice, and the accompanying guitar is a soft compliment (as opposed to the brash 90€™s saxophone solo on Houston€™s version). Houston€™s version, released for the iconic Bodyguard (1992) film, is like a primer for all wannabe singers: this is how you control your registers, vibrato, etc. The power of Houston€™s voice is a perfect foil for the song. In the end, however, I think it€™s hard to call a clear winner, both women bring something unique and equally arresting to their versions.
