Valentine's Day: 20 Greatest Love Songs Of All Time
2. Night and Day - Frank Sinatra
http://youtu.be/YQcecxCUcQc http://youtu.be/nUs-QT6a2gA Cole Porter once said that his inspiration for the song came from a Moroccan prayer call. Porter wrote the song in 1932 for a musical Gay Divorce (not kidding) starring Fred Astaire, who recorded the first version of the song. The songs been recorded by a whos who list of singers, from Doris Day to U2. The Chairman of the Board recorded it at least five times. I think part of songs appeal lies in the fact that Porter captured the obsessiveness of love; we think about the one we love night and day. The songs narrator describes his feelings as torment. The songs imagery is all over the place (jungle shadows, stately clock, roaring traffic) which some might argue is disjointed, but I think it captures the disorientation that often goes hand-in-hand with love. I switch up Sinatra covers of this record, at will, depending on what Im feeling.
