Valentine's Day: 20 Greatest Love Songs Of All Time

2. €œNight and Day€ - Frank Sinatra

http://youtu.be/YQcecxCUcQc http://youtu.be/nUs-QT6a2gA Cole Porter once said that his inspiration for the song came from a Moroccan prayer call. Porter wrote the song in 1932 for a musical Gay Divorce (not kidding) starring Fred Astaire, who recorded the first version of the song. The song€™s been recorded by a who€™s who list of singers, from Doris Day to U2. The Chairman of the Board recorded it at least five times. I think part of song€™s appeal lies in the fact that Porter captured the obsessiveness of love; we think about the one we love night and day. The song€™s narrator describes his feelings as torment. The song€™s imagery is all over the place (jungle shadows, stately clock, roaring traffic) which some might argue is disjointed, but I think it captures the disorientation that often goes hand-in-hand with love. I switch up Sinatra covers of this record, at will, depending on what I€™m feeling.
