Organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) are now available in a wide range of devices and in 2016 the prices look set to fall greatly in price. These use less power than traditional LCDs whilst allowing sharper, thinner, brighter displays and eliminating the need for back lights. Additionally, sunlight that would normally 'wash out' a display has no effect; the screens appear the same even in broad daylight, or when tilted at an angle. Even Apple has reportedly started planning for OLED research. Taiwanese website DigiTimes has published a new report corroborating rumours that Apple is developing flexible OLED technology for future devices, including iPhones and iPads, at its newly discovered factory in northern Taiwan. The report, citing sources within the Taiwanese supply chain, claims Apple has recruited a team of R&D engineers from local companies including AU Optronics and Qualcomm subsidiary SolLink. This means that LCD will be a thing of the past and LED will take over as the dominant display system. LG has already slashed the prices of all - flat and curved - 4K HDR OLED TVs by $1000 and also lowered the price of its HD OLED TV.
