In an interview for the New York Times, Murakami was asked by critic and author Sam Anderson whether or not he could remember the first record he ever bought. Murakami took a look through his extensive record collection and produced The Many Sides Of Gene Pitney. According to Murakami, he bought the record in Kobe, Japan when he was just thirteen years old (but has since played the record so many times that the original wore out and he had to buy a replacement).
