10 Best Fantasy Worlds In Fiction

6. The Land Of Cripples, Bastards And Broken Things - Westeros

Middle earth Shadow of War
HBO

A Song of Ice and Fire has gone on to revolutionise the fantasy landscape, and its adaptation into the grossly popular (up until its unfortunate climax) Game of Thrones has helped to reinvigorate the mainstream's love of traditional fantasy.

Steeped in historical context and references by the creator George R.R. Martin, Westeros is a world that has a deep sense of culture and customs. It appeals to traditional fantasy settings but includes a far more brutal and honest depiction of what humanity and monsters are capable of.

The book series and the show deal with dark themes, and this is likely what makes Westeros feel so unique despite what is essentially a classic medieval setting with some magic and Dragons thrown in. The world is cruel, and although prophecies of heroes and champions exist, in many cases being right does not get you very far.

The popularity of this fictional land is very well documented, and it is justified for the world to be so densely packed with variety and well crafted societal structures that make all of its inhabitants feel genuine and exciting.
