Although nameless the world of The Witcher is a finely crafted plane of existence that feels unique and densely packed with intrigue. The series of books and short stories written by Andrzej Sapkowski is a brilliant combination of a fantasy setting and traditional folkloric concepts from many different cultures.
The titular character of The Witcher Geralt of Rivia guides us through these hostile lands plagued with war but most importantly monsters, of which he has been mutated to kill for the coin. There is something so casually charming about the concept of a world that is so filled with creatures that a position exists purely to assist with any monster related problems.
Whilst the story and politics of this land are incredibly fun to explore, the main highlight of this world are its beastly inhabitants. What makes The Witcher so great as a series is its appreciation of Slavic, Celtic, Norse and many other cultures' mythologies and tales, amalgamating them together to create adversaries for Witchers that make the stories worth reading.
The books have been adapted into a film and TV series known as The Hexer (poorly reviewed) a Netflix series (rather well-received) and a gaming trilogy (critically acclaimed), so there is plenty out there other than the books to delve into this world with.
