Science fiction has evolved so much in its time as a genre. It started as a niche subcategory of entertainment that revolved around goofy sounding aliens, campy characters and simple ideas about the wide-reaching cosmos. But, since then, it's evolved into something that can engulf entire civilisations and explore profound/meaningful philosophies. Still, sometimes it's nice to look back into the goofiness of space travel.

Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and its sequels are an absolute blast, whether you're listening to them, reading them or watching the adaptations. The property started as a radio show but found so much success that it was adapted into a novel series, a 1988 TV show (with a new one coming in 2022) and a movie.

The story follows the mundane and ordinary Englishman Arthur Dent as his home planet is destroyed, and he's carried into the world of deep space by his secret alien companion Ford Prefect. It's filled to the brim with a hilariously sarcastic look at the galaxy, playing with the idea of overly bureaucratic aliens races, androids with depression, silly monsters and transforming space ships.

Overall, it has that wonderful British humour that looks at grand concepts through the lens of normality and pokes fun at the genre's tropes.
