10 Bizarre Realities Of Being Blind, Explained By A (Super Chill) Blind Guy
7. Things That Sighted People Forget
Hey, remember that time Ryan Seacrest tried to high five a blind guy?
There are all kinds of things sighted people do that seem ridiculous, inconvenient or even downright stupid to a blind person. We live in such a visual world, and communicate in such a visual way, that these instincts are so ingrained in us that we can't help ourselves, even when we know the person we're talking to is blind.
Hand gestures are one such quirk, and one that Mr. Seacrest fell foul of in that eternal moment that saw him trying to high five a blind man (never forget).
This said, there is some evidence to suggest that hand gestures are not necessarily a purely visual phenomenon, as research has shown that, not only do blind people use hand gestures, but blind people who speak different languages use language specific hand gestures despite never having seen them.
Giving bad directions, however? There's no excuse for that one, you're just an idiot.
