10 Celebrities Who Were Murdered By Their Own Fans
3. Selena
Selena Quintanilla-Perez, the queen of Tejano music, was famous enough to be known by only one name. The Tejano music subgenre declining after her death is perhaps the greatest testament to her sheer influence. By the time she died at 23 in 1995, she had already won a Grammy.
Her killer, Yolanda Saldivar, was her "number one fan." Saldivar was the founder and president of the Selena fan club. Her apartment was a shrine to Selena. In addition to heading up the fan club, the Quintanillas appointed Saldivar to manage Selena's boutiques, Selena Etc, in 1994.
In March 1995, the Quintanillas found out that Saldivar had been embezzling from the fan club. Abraham Quintanilla, Selena's father, told Saldivar he would be taking up the matter with the police on March 9. On March 31, Saldivar asked Selena to take her to a hospital because she had allegedly been raped on a trip to Mexico. Afterwards, they went to a Days Inn motel where Saldivar was to give Selena some missing financial records.
In the motel, Saldivar pulled a gun on Selena. The singer ran out but Saldivar shot her in the back. She named Saldivar as the shooter and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Saldivar locked herself in her truck and only surrendered after an eight-hour standoff with the police. She held the gun to her head the entire time, insisting that the shooting had been accidental.
Saldivar was sentenced to life in prison. She'll be eligible for parole in 2025.
