5. North Korea
Perhaps an obvious one, this hyper-private communist state is as separate from the rest of the world as possible. However, as 6 million citizens- a quarter of the population- faced starvation in 2011, the leaders were using the national airline to fly McDonald's food into the country from neighbouring China. Senior officials had hamburgers delivered to their home while the UN food agency appealed for 430,000 tons of food aid.
4. Zimbabwe
There was talk in the press and on the streets of Zimbabwe in 2012 of McDonald's setting up shop, with infamous dictator Robert Mugabe keen to boost the economy with a side of fries. This is still yet to materialise though, with McDonalds waiting for the 'right person' to take on the franchise in Zimbabwe. They first aimed to open up a store in 1999, only to be sent running by the country's economic crisis. But with stability slowly returning they may well be competing with the current crop of fast food eateries before long.
3. Barbados
On the outskirts of Bridgetown is a blue building housing a finance company. Wind back to the early nineties and this building was crowned with the golden 'm' and queued out the doors, but not for long. The initial excitement soon passed and locals realised how bland the food was compared to the island's fish, chicken or pork. After six months Ronald gave up, left and has never come back, leaving just an eerily McDonalds shaped building, covered up with blue and white paint.
