Fusako Shigenobu may be a name largely unknown in the West, yet this Communist was the most-wanted terrorist on the planet until her arrest in 2000. Having begun her career as a student activist, Shigenobu eventually formed the Japanese Red Army in an attempt to unite the Japanese population behind a socialist revolution. However, she became notorious for having orchestrated the 1974 attack on the French embassy in The Hague, and having been involved in the hijacking of TWA flight 840 in 1969. Although no-one was killed during either incident, Shigenobu became a feared and renowned terrorist - who it was feared would stop at nothing to get what she wanted. The 69-year-old is currently serving 20 years in a Japanese prison, and was diagnosed with colon and intestinal cancer in 2009.
