10 Despicable War Crimes That Were Shamefully Denied

10. Haditha - The War On Terror

A very ignominious incident in the USA's Iraq campaign, the events in Haditha have had parallels drawn with the My Lai massacre in the Vietnam War by many observers. In November 2005, 24 men, women and children - all civilians - were killed by the US Army in Haditha, Iraq. There have been complaints that the soldiers who were involved in the atrocity did not receive proper punishment, and there have also been complaints that the US Army tried to white wash the whole affair. Despite video evidence of a massacre, the US Army brought 24 bodies to a hospital claiming they had been killed by shrapnel in evidence to the contrary. Just like the soldiers in My Lai who had become increasingly riled by the loss of their comrades by the Viet Cong, soldiers in Haditha had been subjected to bombings by Iraqi insurgents and had lost several soldiers. In both cases, the rules of war went flying out of the window and led to tragic consequences for innocent civilians. The Iraqi government was irate at the cover up and they have been vociferous about their unhappiness that a six year investigation into the incident has yielded no concrete results. The incident left a further bad taste for the Iraqis as it came hot on the heels of the Abu Ghraib situation where there had been widespread revolting violation of Iraqi human rights in the prison - and photographic evidence to back it up. No covering up atrocities there.
