10 Everday American Words That Are Totally Inappropriate In Britain
10. Fanny
The ongoing cascade of American TV programs flooding our screens has created many moments of hilarious miscommunication between the two derivates of the English language; in any American comedy, drama or reality program it is impossible not to be amused by the American use of the term 'fanny.' In the USA it is a term which describes your hind region. By contrast in Britain it is used to describe the female reproductive organ, causing much dismay when used in American programs. This disparity is a source of amusement which is hard to see going extinct; the pervasive use of it in Britain for its true meaning, and the American intransigence to changing the terminology of their programming to suit the British audience means that the confusion is bound to last a long time. America has a multitude of names for the hind quarters; butt, anus, ass and so on, yet this is the one which has caused most offence in Britain as it has a far more lascivious and scandalous subliminal connotation.
