In October 1988, Li Jingzhi received the traumatizing news that her only, two-year-old son Mao Yin, nicknamed 'Jia Jia', was missing.

She assumed that perhaps the boy had gotten lost and he would soon be found. However, a week passed with no sign of him. Li placed 100,000 missing person adverts and flyers around Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi province in central China, but to no avail.

The local authorities believed that Mao Yin's disappearance was linked to a string of child abductions due to the countries one-child policy. Jingzi devoted every weekend to search for her son, following over 300 false leads. She later began working with other parents whose children were also missing and, by volunteering with the Baby Come Home website, helped reunite 29 parents with their children. Sadly, still no sign of 'Jia Jia'.

As hope began fade, on Mother's Day this year, of all the days, Li received news from an anonymous source that her son had been found thanks to facial recognition technology and DNA testing. On the 18 May, the pair reunited at the Xi'an Public Security Bureau and was documented on China Central Television.
