10 Hidden Details In Walt Disney World You Probably Didn’t Know

4. The AVAC System

Have you ever wondered how Walt Disney World parks say so fresh and clean? Firstly, every bin in Disney is no more than 30 feet apart, meaning guests really have no excuse to not tidy their rubbish up. Secondly, there never appears to be cast members emptying the trash cans, yet they are never full or overflowing.

The secret lies within the bins themselves, as they are in fact self-cleaning. Walt was always on the cusp of technology based design and the garbage system was no different. With a little help from the Utilidor system, he installed the patented AVAC system. The ‘Automated Vacuum Assisted Collection’ system transports trash from the bins through a series of vacuum tubes at speeds of up to 60mph to a central processing plant.

The tubes all lead to the trash hub behind Splash Mountain, where it is sorted and the majority is recycled. The system was inspired by a similar design implemented in Sweden, but for some reason never took off on American soil.
