10 Horrific Punishments From History That Could Be In Game Of Thrones

10. Forced To Keep The Head Of Her "Lover" - Catherine I Of Russia

Catherine I was the poor second wife of Peter the Great, the Joffrey Baratheon of 17th/18th century Russia. Peter I died without a male heir because he had tortured and accidentally killed his eldest son. He also hypocritically tried one of his mistresses for adultery and threw her in prison with her innocent family and 30 of her friends. Arguably his worst overreaction, however, was in response to reports that his second wife was being unfaithful. When Catherine became friends with Willem Mons, the brother of Peter's mistress, he ordered him to be executed. After the execution he had Willem's head pickled and made Catherine keep it in a jar in her bedroom as a reminder of her supposed infidelity.
