10 Incredible Animal War Heroes

1. Corporal Jackie

When Albert Marr was drafted by the South African Army to fight in the First World War, he refused to leave his pet baboon, Jackie, behind.

Jackie went on to serve his country with distinction. He matched with the men, saluted superior officers, and fought in the trenches. He was issued with a uniform, paybook, rations , and was made official mascot of the Transvaal Regiment.

Jackie got wounded in the line of duty, sustaining a bullet to the shoulder and getting his right leg blown off. He was promoted from Private to Corporal after the war and retired with a full military pension.
