Stephen King has said his most autobiographical character to date was Jack Torrance from The Shining. He saw Jack as a "heroic character battling his demons the way strong American men are supposed to do." Jack also struggles with alcoholism, which was a former problem of the author.

Many have said when Jack Torrance signs the employment contract this can actually be interpreted as a Faustian pact with the devil, which then explains why such horrifying events take place including blood and ghostly visions. Another connection to Satan is the pose Torrance holds at the end of the film, seen in a shot of a black-and-white photograph of him, is exactly the same as the Tarot card for Baphomet, The Devil.

Although The Shining is one of King€™s more famous works he cannot be held accountable for all the imagery in the movie as it is famously known that he initially did not like Kubrick€™s adaptation of the film.
