Considering the Royal Mile is just a street, there have been so many deaths in this area. The Royal Mile runs from Edinburgh Castle down to Arthur's Seat at Holyrood and it also has the underground vaults beneath it. Body snatchers Burke and Hare worked the Royal Mile for bodies and although Hare was offered immunity for testifying against Hare, Hare was incarcerated and killed on the Mile. Other criminals were also hung on the Mile in front of crowds of people who loved a good execution, and there is also the famous story of the poor drummer boy. A young boy was sent to an underground passage to see where it would lead so he was given a drum in order that people could follow him above ground. However, when the boy was drumming from inside the tunnel, it suddenly stopped and no explanation was given for his death. The passage was sealed off, leaving the boy trapped in there, dead or alive and on quiet nights, you can still hear the drumming coming from underneath the ground.
