9. ASIMO

We couldn't have a robotics article without Asimo, now, could we?

ASIMO, or Advanced Step in Innovative MObility, is probably responsible for generating the most interest in humanoid robotics in recent years. The futuristic-robo-spaceman look that he has going on there is just far enough out of the uncanny valley that he doesn't freak anyone out and he comes with a great range of party tricks.

ASIMO can walk, run and climb stairs as well as respond to voice commands and even recognise when a handshake is offered. That said, despite ASIMO's great public image, he is beginning to be left behind by some newer, younger models.

As futuristic as ASIMO looks, the crucial thing he lacks in spontaneity. Demonstrations have to be carefully choreographed to ensure he doesn't take a tumble, and his style of walking is pretty outdated.

That said, ASIMO still deserves a place on this list as his many public appearances continue to capture the public imagination and perhaps even inspire a future generation of engineers.
