10 Most Scarily Advanced Robots In The World
8. DRC-HUBO
The DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC) was set up after the Japanese Fukushima disaster in the hope it would encourage the creation of super-advanced disaster robots and, in June 2015, the DRC-HUBO won.
The robot, designed by a South Korean team of experts, perhaps isn't the prettiest robot in the world, but its design is very clever. The DRC-HUBO is a variant of a previous model, with various modifications to help it cope with a disaster environment.
One of the more ingenious mods to this robot, is the addition of wheels to the knees. This allows it to hunker down with increased stability when it needs to, solving the stability issues that a lot of humanoid robots face. Another brilliant bit of problem solving is in its stair climbing ability. A lot of robots have trouble with stairs because their knees block their feet from their field of vision. So, what does HUBO do? He goes backwards, and turns his head around, Exorcist-style, for good measure.
This isn't being remote controlled, by the way, this robot is thinking.
So, if you ever find yourself in a disaster zone, keep an eye out, because HUBO could be the one pulling you from the rubble.
