Taking a quick detour (no pun intended) from humanoid robots for a second, self-driving cars have seen a bit of an explosion of late and have managed to make the transition from novelty to fact-of-life impressively quickly. It wasn't all that long ago that we were testing these things out in some of the most barren deserts on the planet, just because we couldn't be sure they weren't going to crash into anything, and now we're setting them loose around some of our busiest cities. In fact, it's now thought that self-driving cars are a great way to actually reduce road traffic accidents. In the test drives for Google's self-driving car, all of the mistakes and accidents were actually down to human error - the car was doing just fine. With the likes of Apple and Elon Musk' Tesla now jumping on that self-driving bandwagon, it seems that automated travel is set to become an everyday occurrence in the not-too-distant future.
