Caroline Mary Luard was shot and killed at her neighbours secluded summerhouse in Kent on the 24th August 1908. On the day of the murder, Mary had accompanied her husband, Major-General Luard, on an afternoon walk with their dog. The couple parted ways at the gates of their neighbour's summerhouse; Mary needed to return home as she was expecting a friend for afternoon tea while her husband wished to carry on to retrieve his golf clubs from his Golf Club's clubhouse.

After retrieving his clubs, Major-General Luard returned home to find his wife's friend still waiting for her. Worried about her whereabouts, the Major-General set out into the woods to search for her. He eventually found her laying dead on the verandah of the summerhouse, her purse and rings missing. Suspicion for the murder fell to the Major-General who later threw himself in front of a train in despair. The true identity of Mary's killer may never be known but speculation has suggested that she was killed and robbed by a man named John Dickman. Dickman was convicted of a similar murder the year following Mary's death in which he robbed and killed a man on a train.
