7. Dead Of Winter

DOW is set in the dead of, well, winter; most of humanity is either dead or zombies. Players take the role of the remaining survivors. The game is mostly played as a cooperative endeavour as you struggle to keep morale up, find food, keep your base tidy, and most importantly stay alive.

Scenarios for victory are chosen at the beginning of the game and range from easy to difficult, so the breaking-in process is sound, which is handy as the game can be difficult to organise at times. It can also run the risk of being pretty alienating for anyone who hasn't played this type of board game before.

Although all players have the joint objective of staying alive, secret objectives are also provided to the players individually and need to be completed for anyone to claim they achieved victory. Survival is not enough: you always need more cans of food.

It's the secret objectives that really increase the intrigue, as there is always the possibility someone's object is to screw over everyone else; and aside from the juggling of several different troubles you now have to worry about someone trying to bring your post-apocalyptic settlement crumbling down.
