10 "Next Big Things" To Expect In The Future

5. Driverless Cars

This one is definitely the "next big thing" in terms of motoring, and it's sure to be life-changing. The UK government have announced that driverless cars will be allowed on public roads from January 2015, which use GPS and ultrasonic sensors to detect its exact location and objects close to them. Similar to a plane on autopilot, the cars take charge of steering, accelarating, indicating and braking... all on their own. Being driven to work every morning? Yes, please! That's us being lazy of course; the benefits of autonomous cars will be boundless. Road crashes kill 1.3 million people every year, injure or disable an additional 20-50 million people, and are the leading cause of death among young adults. With driverless cars, fatigue, alcohol and human error will have no play in accidents; long distance hauls will no longer be an issue (and courier firms will have a lot less costs); and the most stunning feature of all - more and more people will be able to drive. The disabled, the elderly, and even people who are asleep can all get from one destination to the other independently in a driverless car. They'll be more fuel-efficient and definitely ease the burden of the daily commute, which Americans say is the most miserable thing they do every day. As for the school-run? Sorted - simply strap your children in and set the car on it's way!
