Fishing is one of the world's oldest occupations. It also happens to be one of the deadliest.

In 2019, the numbers showed that fishermen had a fatality rate of 86 deaths per 100,000 workers in the US.

However, despite the danger, there are still quite a few folks willing to risk their lives at sea. This is due in large part to the fact that a commercial fisherman can reportedly make as much as $81,203 (or £61,902) per year, with little to no formal education. In order to make it home safely and enjoy their salaries, deep sea fishermen must contend with several hazards.

Harsh weather is major obstacle for those who fish for a living, particularity for folks who wander far from the shoreline. Moreover, the fact that fishermen are often a good distance from any sort of medical aid can make an otherwise treatable ailment (i.e a heart attack) potentially fatal.

That being said, unsurprisingly, drowning is the number one cause of death among commercial fishermen.
