10 Problems Only People From London Ontario Will Understand

9. Traffic Is Terrible When University And College Students Are In Town

You know that joke about the old guys complaining about the kids playing on their lawn? It's kind of like that when university and college students are in town from September to April. The city becomes a lot fuller with them around. The main university in town was called the University of Western Ontario for many years, but recently got changed to Western University. The enrollment at Western is about 35,000 people on a full time basis. Then there's Fanshawe College, which has about 17,000 full time students and another 26,000 part time or so they say. If you count only the full time students at those two institutions that's over 50,000 students that are in town for those eighth months. Some of them already live in London, but a lot of them come in from out of town because they know UWO is a great institution. That's a significant number of students coming in for those eight months. It's tough to get around certain parts of the city when they're there, so some people in the city get cranky thanks to all the extra traffic. Back in 2012, there were riots caused by students around St. Patrick's Day and it made worldwide news. Even the BBC in England picked it up as a story.
