10 Psychological Novels Guaranted To Mess With Your Mind

2. Wetlands By Charlotte Roche

If there is one word to describe this novel, it's REVOLTING. Wetlands isn't a particularly long novel, nor is it very clever. It is, however, vomit-inducing at every turn of the page, and makes the most gross of people you know seem positively angelic. Enter the messed-up brain of 18 year-old Helen Memel, a schoolgirl who is spending time in the proctological ward of a hospital to be treated for an anal fissure caused by the careless shaving of her anal hair (have you had enough already?) Roche casually leads readers throughout the mindset of a teenager upset over her parent's divorce, who is trying to stay in hospital in order to get them back together. Some of the more disgusting parts of the novel include Helen's lack of care for personal hygiene, and also her obsession with bodily fluids, including mucus, pus, earwax, smegma, blood (including menstrual blood), sweat, or tears, and also men's sperm. It is a truly disgusting read, and will have you putting it down in disgust before picking it back up again just to find out what horrible thing this character has to announce next. You will never forget this book. Oh, and the worst thing? Apparently the novel is partly autobiographical...

I love Stephen King and music festivals; I eat my toast upside down; I daydream about getting married probably a bit too much; and I wish every day for a pet sausage dog puppy (who never materialises – sob).
