It's touching and horrifying at the same time; yet another masterpiece by A.M Homes, Music for Torching details a dysfunctional suburban family in the contemporary United States. Sounds boring right? Well, it's not. It's downright crazy. Elaine and Paul, a married middle-class couple, set fire to their house because they are basically bored with their suburban lives. The plot is just a little too close to the realities of what it means to be parents to two children in modern day society; it'll make you look at your neighbors a little more closely, and also push you to question what sort of things you can get away with which are against the law. From lesbian affairs to spontaneous tattoos, this book details what it means to have a mid-life crisis in the worst way. You'll be scared of ever getting past the age of thirty if you make it to the final page (you could have sworn the future had more in store for you than what this bluntly expressive novel suggests). I love Stephen King and music festivals; I eat my toast upside down; I daydream about getting married probably a bit too much; and I wish every day for a pet sausage dog puppy (who never materialises – sob).
