10 Real-World Filming Locations You Really Need To Visit
9. Entrance To The Grail From Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade (Petra, Jordan)
The Indiana Jones series is a bevy of real-world filming locations with far-flung places like Nepal and Sri Lanka being mixed in with more suburban locations like Illinois and Hertfordshire. In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Indy visits Germany, Austria and Venice but - without a doubt - the most spectacular location is Petra in Jordan. In the film it's said to be the entrance to the location of the Holy Grail, supposedly in the middle of a desert in Hatay (now Turkey), but in real life it's moments away from a bustling city and directly facing it are multiple cave dwellings. The actual entrance is called Al Khazneh and is one of the most spectacular pieces of architecture in Jordan, the temple itself being based on Greek classical influences. Steven Spielberg described it as a "hugely spiritual experience", and as a result of its appearance in the film it has become even more of a tourist attraction with regular visits from Petra itself on the hour. It's been listed as one of the 28 Places to Visit Before You Die by the Smithsonian Magazine, and UNESCO has called it "one of the most spectacular locations in man's cultural heritage." Worth a look, we'd say.
