10 Real-World Filming Locations You Really Need To Visit
8. King's Landing From Game Of Thrones (Dubrovnik, Croatia)
Unlike many places in Westeros, King's Landing is probably one of the few places you'd want to visit in real life. Its easy-going atmosphere, Mediterranean climate and stunning landscapes make it a great choice for a holiday, and the fact it's in Croatia and surprisingly easy to get to doesn't hurt either. Although in Season 1 the production team used Mdina in Malta to stand in for King's Landing, they soon discovered they were limited to basic location shots in the town because it was inland, and King's Landing was meant to be on the coast, what with it being a port and all that. From season 2 onwards the team found Dubrovnik, and it had everything King's Landing required including walled-cities and forts. Dubrovnik in reality is a large city on the Adriatic sea and was a big tourist destination before Game of Thrones, but is only gaining more popularity as a result. Compared to most tourist destinations in the area, it's very cultural and reasonably priced, and there's plenty to do there. Croatia is one of the nicest countries in the EU to visit, especially as it was formerly a communist state, and unlike many it's managed to keep its individuality and culture, no doubt in part to its rebellious population.
