10 Reasons Why The Lost City Of Atlantis EXISTS In West Africa

The legend of Atlantis as described by Plato credits the island’s creation to Poseidon, the Greek god of the seas, who fell in love with a mortal woman Cleito and had five sets of twins. The eldest son, named Atlas, was declared king over all others and the ocean and island were named the Atlantic and Atlantis after him, respectively.

While this story has its roots deeply embedded in Greek mythology, it might have some inkling of the truth. According to a study published in 2011, Nigeria is home to the world’s highest rate of twin births in the world. In fact, twins are so common to the Yoruba ethnic group that inhabit southwest Nigeria that they are traditionally given specific names, Taiwo and Kehinde, based on whether they were born first or second.

While this does not necessarily prove that Atlantis lies in West Africa, it is certainly interesting to note that a region that fits several of the criteria for it being the lost city, also happens to boast the world's highest twin births, a detail that is quite prominent in Plato's account.
