10 Reasons You Must Visit Slovenia

1. You Don't Even Need To Remember A Thing

In this photo taken Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, shows Lake Bled in Slovenia with a island and the Church of Our Lady on it. Tucked in the southwestern corner of Slovenia, between Austria and Italy, stands a spectacular landscape: a lush tiny island in the mid

If you aren't convinced as of yet, I wholeheartedly suggest trying the various beverages entailed within this entry and then rethinking. Slovenia is home to some of the most inventive minds in the inebriated world, with a healthy selection of craft beers sitting alongside some of Europe's most underrated wines and a whole host of schnapps to round the whole thing off.

Craft beers around the world are really taking off once more, and Slovenia isn't getting left behind. It all started with the Human Fish brewery (pictured) and a whole host of other excellent brews provide market competition today, from Pelicon (try the Out of China), Reservoir Dogs, Bevog and Mali Grad among many others. I've yet to come across a beer that is objectively bad too, which is always a boon. The years of having to choose between the two dominant lagers, Laško and Union (owned by the same company no less) are over. Beer lovers are in for a treat here.

The classier drinker will also find their palettes enthralled with the wonderful world of Slovenian wine. Reds, whites, even half red half whites, it's all here. Even more interesting are the various tours and tastings one can undertake, in particular the repnice wine cellars in the Bizeljsko region. These cellars almost resemble ant colonies, a collection of slowly carved out tunnels for making, storing and drinking the fine stuff.

We'll end with the schnapps, because that is almost inevitably how these things end. If it's a fruit you've heard of, the chances are you can find someone who has fermented it down into a strong, taste-bud jarring brandy perfect for pre-celebrations, during celebrations, after celebrations and celebrating celebrations. If the caves, lakes, valleys, castles, weird outerspace sheep creatures, bears, seaside or the art spaces haven't convinced you, the chances are a couple of rounds of schnapps will leave you unable to disagree.

Go to Slovenia. Now.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
