10 Sci-Fi Tech That's So Close We Can Barely Contain Ourselves
6. Cybernetic Implants/Nanobots
The idea of man and machine becoming one is a stalwart of the sci-fi genre, but the reality of embedded technology looks increasingly now as less of a case of if than when. Wearable tech seems to be serving as an excellent stepping stone, both technologically and psychologically speaking, with gadgets and enhancements becoming more and more woven in to our very being.
The line between wearable tech and implants may have already been blurred with the imminent arrival of augmented-reality contact lenses that could provide head-up displays in the wearers field of vision. This also means that you dont have to announce to the world that you are, in fact, a douchebag, by wearing Google Glass. The leap between the two is as much psychological as it is technological, but there may be a day when implanting technology straight in to your body will feel as natural as wearing a watch.
We are also on the cusp of being able to treat our ailments with the pleasingly futuristic- sounding nanobot technology. These microbots can target the source of disease with pinpoint precision, doing away with the need for powerful doses of drugs or radiation to cure illnesses such a hepatitis C, cancer and diabetes. It would be like having a colony of tiny, medically trained worker bees buzzing around your system.
