10 Shocking Secrets You Didn’t Know About Anne Boleyn’s Grisly Death
6. Fallout With Cromwell
Who the hell
is Thomas Cromwell I hear you say? He was Henry’s Chief Minister and his go to
guy; in essence he ran the country whilst Henry lusted his way through
countless women and drank merrily. Most importantly for us, he was the man who
plotted Anne’s death.
Cromwell and Anne had originally been friends and both thought very highly of each other. However, their relationship soured after disagreements about Church matters. It's not as big a deal today in the monarchy, but back then religion was everything, particularly so for Cromwell, and Anne became a hindrance to his plans for the English church.
Shortly before her death, reports state that Anne had actually confronted Cromwell and accused him of corruption. This was unheard of at court and would no doubt have been like a scene from Hollyoaks, with gossip about it rife for weeks. In modern terms, it is like Prince Phillip having a go at Boris Johnson. Not too interesting for the average people but the press would be all over it.
This in essence forced Cromwell’s hand and he created a web of lies that led to Anne’s death. It became a him or her situation and luckily for Thomas he was the one to leave alive. More fool him though because he was executed by Henry years later.
