10 Skills To Help You Survive The Apocalypse
2. DIY First Aid
It's going to be tough out there and, as much as you need to avoid getting hurt in the first place, accidents happen. If you can get your hands on a decent first aid kit then awesome, but there are some things you can improvise if you need to.
The main thing to avoid is infection. Without proper care, even a splinter can turn into a deadly, biological time-bomb, so ensuring that any wounds are clean and protected is key.
For stitches, dental floss and superglue are great (just be sure to sterilise your needle) and you can even close a head wound very effectively using your own hair. Just grab two tufts of hair either side of the wound, tie in a knot, pulling the edges together, and secure with superglue. Repeat all along the wound. As a bonus, you won't have to remove the stitches as the hair will simply grow out (hopefully slower than the wound heals).
When it comes to improvising dressings, duct tape is your friend. We've already discussed the usefulness of tampons as a sterile wound dressing, and if these are secured in place with lashings and lashings of duct tape they will be secure and relatively water and germ proof.
You can stabilise broken bones and sprains by wrapping them in layers of duct tape and any padding you can find, just don't waste sterile dressings on these.
Duct tape also makes an excellent alternative to waxing strips because, even in an apocalypse situation, you deserve to feel like a sexy, smooth goddess (for the love of god don't try this).
