As it's the end of the world, you're going to need to arm yourself. With the collapse of civilisation, you're open to attack from wild animals, other survivors and zombies.

The key is to keep it simple. Many of the devices that would make you feel safest (i.e. a great big gun) are more likely to get you killed before too long.

On the subject of guns, whilst they might seem like the obvious choice, they have some drawbacks. For a start, they run out of ammo, so unless you have a reliable supply, it's going to become a paperweight before too long, not to mention the fact that they are loud, so the moment you shoot one, the rest will know where to find you.

Guns are probably more useful as a method of intimidation against other humans, as you can use it to frighten or ward off a hostile human without firing a shot.

Fire weapons such as flamethrowers and molotov cocktails are probably not much use as you run the risk of simply turning an unstoppable army of zombies into an unstoppable army of zombies that is on fire.

Your most reliable option is some kind of melee weapon, so something heavy that you are able to swing at someone/something's face. Bats, hammers, axes, crowbars - completely reusable, easy enough to carry and if you swing them hard enough they'll destroy the brain of both the living and the undead.

Of course, in a zombie apocalypse situation, it might not be a great idea to go round adding to the hordes of undead by killing other survivors. Depending on how the condition spreads, a recently-dead human intruder might well just turn into a zombie. In this case, you might want to consider arming yourself with a taser which will immobilise a human, but without running the risk of creating a zombie in your living room.
