10 Spooky Phantom Vehicle Tales From Around The World
5. Old Ely Ghost Train
Called the official steam locomotive of Nevada, Locomotive 40 was built in 1910. She operated as a passenger service until just before the Pearl Harbor bombing in 1941. After America entered the war, the demand for scrap metal skyrocketed and the crew at Ely, where Locomotive 40 was kept, feared officials would order the locomotive to be scrapped.
But they didn’t have to do anything about it. Legend has it that Locomotive 40 refused to be chopped up for parts and would run on her own up to a nearby mine and hide in the middle of the night. No one ever caught her in the act but when her whistle was heard traveling over the valley, residents knew the old ghost train of Ely was hiding away again in the deepest part of the mine.
