5. iOS Update Makes Phone Waterproof
This hoax was the precursor to the recent iOS 8 Wave shenanigans, and emerged back when iOS 7 was first released. Much like Wave, an anonymous web user created a fake announcement image that claimed iOS 7 would make the iPhone completely waterproof. Preying on those with zero understanding of how technology works, the hoax stated that iOS 7 could detect and changes in thermo-distribution, using the touch screen and home button. In case of an emergency, the phones power would switch off, which is apparently enough to prevent any kind of water damage. The fake announcement was shared by the thousands, and lots of (hilarious) angry tweets ensued. At least everyone involved learned a valuable lesson. Oh wait
